Month to MonthDuring your pregnancy, you feel your baby kick, tellin you that your child
is strong and growing, but this reassuring kick only happens after more than
three months of amazing growth. Here is a month by month summary of your baby's development. Month One - Imagine a body at month's end not longer than 1/2 inch and weighing less than 1/30 of an ounce. Heart is beating. Digestive system is forming. Tiny limb buds promise arms and legs. Eyes, ears and nose are foreshadowed on baby's face and head. A spinal cord is growing. Month Two - That big toe that will jab you in the fourth month is growing. Legs and arms are developing nicely, and eyelids, nostrils, lips and a tongue that will one day be your babby's facial features are taking shape. All major organs and systems are present though incomplete. Lungs are appearing and reproductive organs are appearing. Your baby weighs about as much as a paper clip, is about as long, and has a new scientific name, fetus. Month Three - Your baby can form a fist and bend his/her body. Vocal cords are complete for future sweet sounds and loud crying, and kidneys are developed enough to secrete urine. Your baby has grown another two inches, is three to four inches long and tops the scales at one ounce. Month Four - You may feel that first kick! Enjoy it. Sometime this month or next it will happen. Baby is now a fully formed fetus and his/her sex has been determined. All your child has to do now is gro and grow and grow for five more months. Downy hair, called lanugo, begins growing all over his/her body, and baby now sleeps and swallows. Over six inches long and weighing almost four ounces, when your baby moves now you might feel it. Your doctor might be able to hear a heartbeat with a stethoscope. (Bring a tape recorder to your OB-GYN's office to record it!) Month Five - a really active baby is alive inside of you. No doubt about it now! Your baby is growing fast, and you are starting to "show". Nature's finishing touches, such as fingernails and eyebrows, are starting to tidy up baby's appearances. The digestive sytem is now fully operational and helping little one grow. He/she is seven to 12 inches long and weighs between 1/2 and one pound. Month Six - Other than being red, wrinkled, standing 11-14 inches tall and weighing about 1 1/2 pounds, your baby looks like any other kid on the block. All skin and bones, but growing rapidly, this one's eyelids are separating for the day he/she sees the big world. Month Seven - More active than ever before, kicking and stretching, sucking its thumb, opening and closing its eyes, your baby is becoming presentable by adding fat and losing wrinkles. He/she weighs about three pounds and is almost 15 inches long. Month Eight - Your baby is too big at 17 inches and almost five pounds to move freely but can kick harder than ever. His/her world turns upside down as baby turns to the head-down position. Month Nine- Your baby puts on weight like you wouldn't believe: a 1/2 pound a week. Now living in really tight quarters, baby's knees touch his/her nose and thighs are tight against his/her body. Fine downy hair disappears, eyes are slate colored, fingernaiiils are growing longer. Your baby is about 20 inches long an usually weighs six to nine pounds. Soon, he/she will descend into your pelvis area and could arrive between your 37th and 42nd week. Both the baby and you are ready! |
Be Kind to your FeetFor the next nine months your feet will undergo the added stress of additional weight, lots of it. This is tootsie abuse. Not only do the majority of women complain about puffy feet and ankles, once the baby is born they are surprised to learn that their foot has "grown" 1/2 to 1 full shoe size! To combat all of these occurences, try to pamper your feet daily. If possible, put your gigh heels away and wear your lower-heeled shoes during your pregnancy. This will equialize the wieght over your entire foot. Consider elevating them whenever you are sitting. Yes, it sounds "maw maw" (like what your great grandmother does) but this simple procedure may reduce potential swelling in your ankles and feet. Now is the time to treat yourself to freuent pedicures and foot massages. Towards the end of your pregnancy, you may not be able to see or reach your feet but don't forget about them. Get a friend to help out or set an appointment at a hair salan to continue your footcare. Pedicures can be wonderful as your feet will agree.
